La Llorona The Wailing Woman

Mexico

La Llorona (The Wailing Woman) Mexico – This is the  legend of a woman who was unloved by her husband and after finding him with another woman she took out her vengeance by drowning her children (his beloved sons) in the river and then drowns herself. After death she was denied entry into heaven until she locates the souls of her two sons. Wailing and crying as she walks the earth in search of her boys. Finding other children she steals them away to the same river where they suffer the same fate as herself and her sons. The earliest written reference to La Llorona was in the 1800’s in a sonnet penned by Manuel Carpio but there was no reference to infanticide only that she murdered her husband.
